Butohworkshop in the nature of southern Switzerland, Centovalli Ticino

17- 31 August 2025

……a la recherche du corps perdu…..

…or passing through the gate of nothingness. The philosophy and practice of Japanese Butoh dance is a search for the lost body, a search for the poetic, truthful and archaic body. A body that has left social conditions behind and has learned to distance itself from its ego. A body in search of nothingness. Nothingness as the fundamental state from which everything emerges, a state that contains everything, that is not yet formed or defined, a state that makes it possible to be reborn in all forms and creatures. The process of becoming takes place by approaching this primordial state of emptiness. Dancers become wind, water, mist, plants, animals, stones, scents…. .

We work mainly in nature. She is our master teacher of transformation and the eternal cycle of dying, becoming and passing away. She reminds us what it means to be in the now.

Salmina is a rustico hamlet in the Centovalli in the Swiss canton of Ticino. The place is located behind Intragna below Corcapolo and above the wild mountain stream Melezza and is surrounded by a densely wooded natural landscape from which jagged rocks rise up. It gives us everything we need to connect with the elements and entities of nature and to expand our perception towards a more sensitive and intuitive understanding of ourselves.

The workshop is aimed at people who are interested in Japanese Butoh dance and feel the desire to delve deeper into the nature of things.

Butoh Workshop Epauvillers/JU 1-7 Oct 2024

the empty house or the house of emptiness

For this fall workshop, we have a large empty house with a spacious garden at our disposal. We will train in the house, in the garden and in the great outdoors. We will embark on a performative search for lost time, because an abandoned house is always impregnated with traces of memory. Our field of perception and research is the house, the garden, our own bodies and the void.

Where there is nothing, everything is possible

For me, “empty space” is the point or place in a creative process

where nothing comes to mind and an absolute emptiness spreads in my head.

Peter Brook

Interest in exploring empty space, the void. What is empty space in relation to body and mind? How can I allow and endure the empty space? How does my body sensation change in empty space?

Masaki Iwana is an important teacher. In 2003, she co-founded the Butoh dance group In Between. In 2010, together with Fribourg and Strasbourg, she founded the tri-national ButohOff festival in Basel, which took place every two years across national borders. Shibari, the japanese Art of tying-Beginner course

Shibari/Kinbaku is a Japanese form of tying people with ropes which was horrific in its past, however the ideas of modern Japanese slavery have changed and taken on a different meaning in today’s world. This has grown into art nowadays, the „essence“ of which, although it may differ depending on individual interests; I think we can generally say that in most cases it is about the liberation of the body and soul through bondage reaching a state of catharsis.

It is a nonverbal communication form where the object is the rope and the subject is being chosen by the two parties, considering their wishes and the „wheel of consent“. It is a play of trust, vulnerability, listening.

For Julia Shibari is a kind of gate to experience our true selves which transcend our character. In the catharsis experienced in tragedy, when opposing forces necessarily clash (in this case most likely these are pain and pleasure), a gate opens. As in death. Perhaps one of the keywords of Shibari for her is “death”. The fulfillment of life in death. The boundaries of the „I“ are blurred, the two people merge together, turning into a common dance. It can never be the same, nor can two moments.

Requirements:

Bring ropes if possible. Julia will bring every one of hers, but depending on the amount of people, hers might not be enough. They don’t have to be special but make sure it has pleasant contact with the skin.

Willingness to be in contact with someone you may not know is recommended, for the sake of learning on each other’s bodies. You can also come in pairs if that suits you more.

Bring your curiosity and playfulness.
